eSunshineCoast
The new website www.eSunshineCoast.com.au was launched only last month.
It is all about accommodation - as "our passion is to find great resorts, apartments and Holiday Accommodation so that you can enjoy the fabulous Sunshine Coast".
As you might expect, there are pages for each location (Noosa, Coolum, Maroochy etc) and pages for each resort. By far the most resorts are located in Noosa, but Mooloolaba is also getting busy.
www.eSunshineCoast.com.au also has a section on the Fraser Coast which is only about 180 kms north of Noosa.

www.cairnsportdouglas.com
I'm working hard for www.cairnsportdouglas.com to be recognised in the search engines. Is it worth the effort?
Based on experiences with my other site www.broadbeach.net.au it is a complete waste of time.
This site has has been at No 1 in Yahoo for a few weeks now on the popular search term "broadbeach accommodation" Guess what? There is no increase in traffic.
When you see the search result on the screen you will quickly see why. There are 10 websites on the screen that comes up - 8 paid and 2 searches. Four of the paid listings are highlighted, and they seem to attract people more than the non-paid search results ...
That's good to know!

Cairns Port Douglas Dot Com
Cairns Port Douglas Dot Com is over 4 months old now. Its Google ranking is 3 and traffic is improving.
The website has a good choice of resorts in Cairns and very good choice in Port Douglas. There is not so much to brag about on the Northern Beaches and Palm Cove, but hopefully we can improve.
I'm working on the link exchange to improve search engine optimisation, but content is more important by the looks of it. That's good!

Movie stars hit Port
I know this is old news, but
Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson have been turning heads in Port as they star in the film Fool’s Good (not something else, thanks for the comment) which also features Ray Winstone and Donald Sutherland.
Filming in idyllic Port, the film sees McConaughey and Hudson play married treasure hunters whose eight-year search for booty leaves them broke and out of gas. Just as they divorce, they stumble upon a missing clue that might lead them to a fortune.
Mum Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel were also spotted in Macrossan, and some have suggested that Goldie is actually more dopey in real life ...
10 points to the female cop who stopped Matthew McConaughey on his bike ... to get his autograph!

Mr Whisper
I receive emails every week about real estate for sale in Port Douglas. Most is boring and of no consequence to me. However, yesterday I received an email in a new format - from Mr Whisper - which I quite enjoyed. Here's what he had to say:
MR WHISPER'S PORT REPORT. 09/11/2006
It's a great start to the day by taking a walk along Four Mile Beach. Although a better way is to join the yoga classes. Mr Whisper spotted our local councilor Rod Davis enjoying the class. Was that position "salute to the sun" Rod or salute to your fellow council...?
Nothing better than a wander down to On the Inlet with a few friends for a beer or two and to watch George the Groper do his jump thing. The new office block under construction is coming along well on the corner of Grant & Port Douglas's Champs Elysees - you know, Warner St.
Sunday breakfast at La Cucina - that's the spot for the A-listers in town - heard over coffee & fruit salad that Turtle Cove has been bought by a bunch of local fellas, heterosexual all of them...
Hot - or should that be cold? - Off the press is the latest in Ice Cream land. Lots happening, with one Wendy arriving on Macrossan St and Wicked Wendy leaving (the Wicked stays behind.)
Zinc is traveling well under the guidance of Angelo and is a favorite spot for a sunset drink for Mr Whisper. The rumour over the Moet was that the old Havana site was to become a hotel with the same starting letter as "Havana"- but nothing to do with Paris & Nicky........ mmmmm
The town is movie mad this week. "Fools Gold "has started shooting around the town and elsewhere. Kate Hudson & Matthew McConaughey are well settled in with the locals whilst more recent arrivals include Donald Sutherland and Ray Winstone.
Talking of Donald Sutherland - we were enjoying lunch with the birds at Thala Beach Resort and who should arrive but the Donald himself - was that Christina Ricci dining with him?
As you can guess its going to be a VERY busy social circuit for Mr Whisper over the next few week....
Cut, as they say in the movies.....

Banana Lady & the Big Croc
There are 2 things we always do when we cross the Daintree.
First - we always stop on the other side to buy bananas from the nice Indonesian lady. The best and tastiest bananas you ever had - picked by hand that same morning. This year she mentioned that her licence is up for review, but surely they couldn't .... ?
Second - we always have lunch and a swim at Coconut Beach. Well, we gave the swim a big miss this year. Apparantly a 5 meter croc lives near the outlet at the northern end of the beach, and he swims past every morning and afternoon. Hmmmm ...
We walked up to the inlet. It's beautiful there, but what a waste when you can only look!

Speed Boat to the Reef
A new custom build speed boat to bring visitors to the reef in 15 minutes was launched earlier this year.
Extra Action Water Sports - a company that has been operating for the past 10 years now offers a thrill boat ride on it's new "ocean sprinter". The ocean sprinter makes three trips daily to Low Isles for snorkelling and is a great alternative for people who do not want to spend all day on a reef trip but do want to get wet and take a look beneath the sea.
The thrill boat travels up to 80km/hr so it only takes 15 minutes to get you there, all the more time for swimming, snorkelling and checking out the 300 different types of coral.
The "Extra Action Water Sports Reef Sprinter" took 2 years to design and 6 months to build.

Diverse Travel
One of our favourite travel websites is that of Diverse Travel, and we especially like the great images and the music (the music is on in the background as I write this).
Diverse Travel say about themselves:
"We are the creators of special journeys. Our dedication has been to capturing the unusual experiences that reflect the unique essence of Australia. Like the finest gourmet restaurant we blend the raw ingredients of nature, heritage and indigenous culture into tantalising menus to delight your senses. Through first hand experience and the diverse background of our specialist team we have forged strong links with Aboriginal people, high quality tour operators and guides located throughout Australia. Let us share with you the very best of nature based, eco and cross-cultural tourism Australia has to offer".
Diverse Travel will obviously be in a position to assist with what you want to do in the far far north.

Latitude 16
Met with Daniel, the Manager of Mowbray by the Sea. They are putting together a marketing plan under the umbrella of Latitiude 16.
Basically, the story is that Stella Resorts now control too many properties in Port Douglas (the Outrigger resorts will be incorporated into the Stella brands soon) and it is hard for the smaller independent resorts to market themselves.
The majority of properties near the "golden triangle" which is where Macrossan and the 4 Mile Beach meet, believe they are in the best spot, (and who can argue). Hence, 8-10 of them have got together to market the "golden triangle" under the umbrella of Latitude 16.
These resorts include Driftwood Mantaray, Coral Apartments, Tropical Reef, Sunseeker, Tropic Sands, Garrick House and Mowbray by the Sea. Port Douglas Beaches Resort and a couple of others to join soon.
You can't really argue about the location. Personally I prefer to stay close to the beach, and accept (even enjoy) a 5-10 minute walk to the centre of Macrossan. That means that I favour the beach side of Davidson Street, preferably no further out than the PortSea (which represents a fair but nice walk along the beach).

Indigenous Tourism
Aboriginal tourism is about to set up a website www.indigenoustourism.com.au - also referred to as the Australian Indigenous Tourism Gateway.
In 2007 the Indigenous Development Group, sponsors and owners of this website, will be launching the gateway to the world and trying to encourage the world to come and visit legendary and interesting people like Lindsay Bookie (of Lincartan Bush Tucker Tours).
To enable us to achieve this mammoth task, we need to showcase Indigenous Tourism products in Australia. In order to achieve just half of this task, we need to know what Indigenous tourism products are out there. This is where people like Lindsay Bookie come in. If you have an Indigenous Tourism product or service and want to promote it to the world, let us know about it by contacting contact@indigenous.com.au

Cooktown
On July 13/14 we suggested you check out the new inland road to Cooktown. We did just that during our first week in Port.
We left Port Douglas about 8.30 am and made the 270 kms to Cooktown in good time for lunch, with a couple of small stops to break the monotony. The roads are great all the way.
The lady at the Booking Centre was helpful. She recommended a room at the Seaview Motel (with superb views overlooking the Endeavour River), and told us everything we needed to know for a 2 day / 1 night stay in Cooktown. We checked out the museum, light house, cemetery and botanical gardens - all worthwhile things to do. Look out for the wallabies at the oval in the botanical gardens.
Early start the next day for a 4-5 hour aboriginal rock art tour with Willie of Guurrbi Tours.
Guurrbi Tours offers a rare opportunity to walk with Willie Gordon, a Nugal-warra Elder, on his traditional lands, and to see the rock art through his eyes, and to learn why the paintings’ conservation is of such importance to the Nugal-warra people.
Previously inaccessible to visitors, the multitude of rock art sites are steeped in stories of both cultural and spiritual significance, and include the Reconciliation Cave, which portrays a heart-warming story of acceptance and compassion, and an ancestral Birthing Cave which is a place of particular importance to the clan.
We had lunch at the bakery before heading back to Port. On the way out from Cooktown you can stop near the Bloomfield turn-off (about 2-3 km on the dirt road) for a swim in the river. (its supposed to be safe, but make sure you find the right spot!).

Back from Two Weeks in Port
We are just back from two great weeks in Port Douglas. I must admit that I did have some ambition to update the blog when there, but get real. There are far better things to do in the Far Far North.
We copped a fair bit of wind the first week, so we did do a bit of exploring - including a trip to Cooktown. The last days were perfect and we spent a lot of time on the beach.
Will provide daily updates now, and just to help my memory, these updates will include
> Cooktown - where we stayed overnight at the Seaview and did the tour with Willie
> Daintree - the banana lady and the big croc at Coconut Beach
> Latitude16 - 8 resorts in the golden triangle, and 2 more to come
> Eating out in the quiet surroundings of the Yacht Club and the Marina

Rainforest Habitat Port Douglas
The purpose of the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary is;
"To enable visitors to appreciate and understand with a little more detail the intricate interdependence of rainforest fauna and flora by experiencing up close, some of its inhabitants and through this appreciation, aid its conservation."
Though observation… Appreciation.Through appreciation… Conservation.
The Rainforest Habitat is a wildlife park of the future and world leader in mixed immersion exhibits. It is situated on eight acres of land that has been recreated to provide a window into our natural environment.
Visitors can wander through four different and unique environments that depict over 180 species of the surrounding rainforest, wetlands, woodlands and grasslands.
Regular guided tours are an essential part of the park's focus on biological conservation, as are guest's interaction with wildlife within the sanctuary.
Constructed in 1988 on previously low yield agricultural land, the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary covers over two hectares. With two of the four environments covered by specially designed cyclone proof shade cloth and two open-air exhibits, guests become an insignificant observer amidst the intricate performance of wildlife. Boardwalks intertwine through the canopy and rainforest floor of these environments, providing an exhilarating and educating journey for all.
Today the Rainforest Habitat is Australia's leading environmental wildlife park, and boasting over 1600 animals, contains the largest collection in immersion exhibits. Informative guided tours, experiential displays and immersion exhibits provide an experience found nowhere else.
All these factors have allowed the Rainforest Habitat to gain Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation and become a winner of many major Tourism Awards in both Tropical North Queensland and Queensland.

Australian Saltwater Crocodile
Order: Crocodylia
Family: Crocodylidae
Subfamily: Crocodylinae
Genus & Species: Crocodylus porosus
APPEARANCE
The Australian saltwater crocodile is one of the most aggressive and dangerous crocodiles. Is is also the largest living reptile, exceeding the Komodo dragon in size. Sexual dimorphism is present in this species, with the females attaining lengths of 10 ft (3 m) and males 10-19.5 ft (3-6 m). 27 ft (10.6 m) specimens have been recorded in the wild, but are extremely rare.
Australian saltwater crocodiles have very large heads. A pair of ridges run from the eyes along the center of the snout. The eyes, ears, and nostrils are located on the same plane on the top of the head, allowing for it to see, hear, and breathe while almost totally submerged. The eyes have a special second pair of eyelids known as the nictitating membrane. These eyelids are clear and protect the eyes while underwater. The ears, situated behind the eyes, have flaps which also close while underwater. The jaws are heavyset and contain 64-68 teeth. The teeth in the upper jaw are perfectly aligned with those in the lower jaw. The fourth tooth on each side of the bottom jaw is larger than the other teeth and is visible when the mouth is closed.
Juvenile Australian saltwater crocodiles are yellow in colour with black stripes and spots. As they mature, the colour becomes paler and the stripes indistinct until they disappear. Adults are dark in colour with light grey areas. The belly is yellowish and the underside of the tail is grey near the tip. Dark bands are located on the lower flanks. The hide lacks osteoderms (bony plates) and is ideal for tanning in the leather industry. Scales are oval in shape and the scutes are small. The colouration of this species differs in regions; some areas have juveniles much lighter in colour than elsewhere.
HABITAT
The Australian saltwater crocodile is a mostly aquatic animal that rarely spends time on land. They are found mainly in brackish waters near rivers or coasts, but can also be found in freshwater rivers. The juveniles are raised in fresh water, the adolescents in more saline water. They move from water to water between the dry and wet seasons. Australian saltwater crocodiles are very territorial. The weaker ones are kicked out of their territories and pushed out into the sea, where they might swim over 1000 km to establish a new territory. Because of this they have a wide range, including Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Singapore, Bangladesh, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Solomon Islands, and various other islands in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans. They have been exterminated from the Seychelles islands.
FOOD
Australian saltwater crocodiles will eat almost anything that they can overpower, including humans. Their reputation as a maneater is real, but grossly exaggerated. More people are killed by vending machines than by Australian saltwater crocodiles (that's a fact!)
Juveniles feed on insects, crustaceans, small reptiles, frogs, and small fish. More mature, larger crocs eat turtles, goannas, snakes, birds, livestock (cows), buffalo, monkeys, wild boar, and mudcrabs.
ENEMIES
Australian saltwater crocodiles were once hunted extensively by humans for their hide, which is the most valuable of all the crocodiles. In many countries, such as Australia, hunting is illegal, yet they are still hunted by poachers. Australia has a population of 100 000 Australian saltwater crocodiles and in 1997 aboriginals were given the right to hunt wild adults. This hasn't significantly altered their population. On other islands, however, they have been hunted almost to extinction, due to their hide and their reputation as maneaters. Humans aren't their only threat. On the island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), feral buffalo destroy their nesting habitats. Monitor lizards and feral and wild pigs eat their eggs, and the juveniles are eaten by goannas, turtles, Australian freshwater crocodiles and territorial Australian saltwater crocodile males. Currently, Australian saltwater crocodiles are labeled as low risk.
BREEDING
Australian saltwater crocodiles reach sexual maturity at 10-12 years and males at 16 years. Mound nests are made between November and March, and 40-60 eggs are laid. If the nest is around 31.6° C, all the eggs will become male. Above or below that and they are females. The eggs hatch after 90 days. Only 1% of the hatchlings will make it to maturity.

Steve Irwin 1962 - 2006
We noted in the previous article how dangerous animals in the Tropics are, and we were not kidding. We have just received the devastating news from Port Douglas, and it is just too sad. Steve Irwin was a champion and a true hero for all of us - he will be remembered for all the right reasons. Below is the media statement released on the Australia Zoo website earlier today. Our thoughts go out to his wife Terri and their two young children Bindi and Bob.
Media statement – 4 September 2006
Steve Irwin
At 11am today, the 4th September 2006, Steve Irwin was fatally wounded by a stingray barb to his heart whilst filming a sequence on Batt Reef off Port Douglas for his daughter’s new TV series. Emergency services were called from Cairns Rescue Base and met Croc One, Steve’s rescue vessel at Low Isle on the Great Barrier Reef. The Croc One crew performed constant CPR during the thirty minute dash to Low Isle, but the medical staff pronounced Steve dead at approx. 12 noon.
His producer and closest friend, John Stainton said on Croc One today,“The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest Dads on the planet. He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Crocs Rule! ”

The Cassowary
One thing I find hard to come to grips with about Tropical Queensland is the crocs - and if the crocs don't get you, then the snakes will - and if its not the snakes then it will be the stingers or the spiders or the cassowaries or ...... you get the drift.
The Daintree rainforest is a critical habitat and a 'hot spot' for the Southern Cassowary which is classified as an endangered species.
Never feed a cassowary, it puts other visitors at risk. Cassowaries can be very dangerous, especially if "you don't come up with the goods", and it puts the cassowary at risk at well. Besides, it's illegal.
The main road to Cape Tribulation area cuts through the home ranges of at least four different birds. These locations are marked by cassowary signs.
When you see the cassowary road sign SLOW DOWN. You don't want to spoil your holiday by killing an endangered animal. Vehicle traffic is the number one cause of adult cassowary deaths.
SOME FACTS ABOUT CASSOWARIES
The Southern Cassowary is so named because it also occurs on the Southern slopes of New Guinea's mountains. Cassowaries are probably best known as fruit eaters, but they will eat just about anything, including small birds, insects and rodents. They are also intensely curious, but sadly not very bright, which can lead to some rather unfortunate incidents.
Cassowaries can grow up to two metres tall and weight 85 kilograms. But apart from their size, they also have a formidable dagger-like claw on each foot, and can run up to 50 km/hr. They have a striking blue head with bright red wattles, and a glossy black coat.
The elongated structure on top of the cassowary’s skull, called a casque, is filled with a network of very thin bone. The reason that cassowaries evolved casques is still debated, but the protruding structures may help them poke through the dense vegetation of their rainforest habitat without hurting their heads. You can see a great skull photo which rotates at the California Academy of Science web site
For more information visit the Cassowary Husbandry Workshop for absolutely everything you ever wanted to know about captive cassowaries. Focuses on the Southern Cassowary.

On the Cairns and Region Convention Bureau website, you can read the following about palm Cove:

Palm Cove
Moving from Port Douglas towards Cairns - Palm Cove is another popular spot that has experienced major developments in the past 5 years. One key difference to Port is that the major resorts are situated right on the beach, (but in my opinion, it is not quite like the 4 Mile Beach, and it can also get a bit windy along the Esplanade).
Enjoy an early morning dip in the tranquil Coral Sea waters directly opposite your resort or luxuriate in the tropical warmth beside pool. Wander the stretch of Palm Cove Esplanade to discover a chic range of restaurants and cocktail bars that will satisfy both discerning palates and family appetites.
Palm Cove is fast becoming the Riviera of Tropical North Queensland. A mere thirty minutes drive north from the bustle of central Cairns, it has become an enclave for those seeking luxury amidst palm fringed tranquillity. Increasing numbers of accomplished restaurateurs have also been drawn to the area by this new-style chic and the dining scene is now at the forefront of the tropical north Queensland culinary experience.
The Cove is ideally situated between Port Douglas and Cairns, giving easy access to the retail opportunities and the multitude of day trips available while those intending to visit the Great Barrier Reef can board the high speed catamarans which depart from Palm Cove’s jetty. Palm Cove exudes a sense of intimacy, that of a sophisticated village overlooking the beauty of the Coral Sea and embraced by the warmth of the tropical north.

Atherton Tablelands
www.athertontableland.com is the official web site for Tropical Tablelands Tourism (TTT), the approved Local Tourism Organisation for the area.
Atherton Tablelands in the Cairns Highlands
A scenic one hour drive in the Highlands west from Cairns is the Atherton Tableland - Tropical North Queensland's own mountain getaway. Situated between the Bellenden Ker Range and the Great Dividing Range, it is regarded as one of the region's best kept secrets.
World Heritage Rainforest
The Atherton Tableland in the Cairns Highlands is a blend of the best attractions of the tropics; a combination of nature and lifestyle at its finest. Among the World Heritage listed rainforests, national parks, mountains, rivers, lakes and waterfalls are some of Australia's richest agricultural lands and charming small townships.
Biologists have described the spectacular rainforests of the Wet Tropics as the "greatest celebration of life on earth". The farm and grazing lands are "the food bowl" of the northern tropics - yielding a constant supply of fruit, vegetables and grains to local and export markets.
Mild Temperature
The rural landscape of the Atherton Tableland is green throughout most of the year, with a temperature which rarely exceeds 30 degrees C. Everything, including the people, thrives on this cool tropical plateau some 600-1100 metres above sea level where temperatures and humidity are lower than on the coastal plain.
Atherton Tableland Attractions
Here settlers from all over the world share their arts, crafts, music and festivals. For visitors, the Tablelands present opportunities for bush walking, bird watching, a wildlife cruise, marsupial spotting, hot air ballooning and water sports as diverse as fishing and white water rafting.
Winding roads lead to spectacular lookouts and waterfalls, and highlights include Australia's widest waterfall - Millstream Falls - and many others flowing all year round, the deep blue waters of extinct volcano crater lakes, Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham, the ancient Bromfield Swamp near Malanda and the Hypipamee National Park and crater near Herberton.

Kuranda Village
The picturesque mountain retreat of Kuranda Village is just 25km northwest of Cairns in Far North Queensland, Australia and is surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest. Visitors can travel to Kuranda on Kuranda’s Historic Scenic Railway or by car or bus, via the spectacular Kuranda Range Road or over the rainforest on Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.
Kuranda has come a long way from its initial origins as a centre for those choosing an alternative lifestyle in the late 60’s. Historic Buildings from the villages past now house a variety of upmarket restaurants, cafes and bars. It is still laid back, but with a style and sophistication that sets it apart from other Cairns Highlands Venues and Attractions.
Kuranda’s shops and markets with their exotically handcrafted goods, Aboriginal artefacts, restaurants and coffee shops make Kuranda a well known day destination, but to truly enjoy the ambience this village has to offer you really have to stay a few nights. Whether you are looking for a cosy bed and breakfast, a well maintained multi-choice accommodation and camping park, a hotel that when you step inside you feel like you are back in the 1920's, a georgeous resort or a backpackers hostel, you'll find it in Kuranda.
Take the time to visit some of Kuranda’s many first class nature based tourist attractions, which include koalas, butterflies, native and exotic birds, kangaroos and reptiles. Don’t miss the famous Barron Falls, which are breathtaking. You can also see traditional Aboriginal dancers perform, travel on a riverboat on the mighty Barron River or join an Army Duck ride through the rainforest.

Coconut Beach - Cape Tribulation
Go to www.daintreecoast.com and check out the Deserted Beaches including our favourite Coconut Beach.
Hire a car in Port and drive north through Mossman and the cane fields. Make sure you buy some fresh bananas where you cross the Daintree River. The gorgeous Coconut Beach is 2 km south of Cape Tribulation.
You can access this beach through the restaurant or from further south where the road touches the beach. The beach is very quiet, and particularly inviting with late afternoon sun.
There is a large fringing reef with a steep drop off, which provides excellent fishing with handlines at low tide out on the reef edge. Small stingrays (!) may be observed inbetween the rocks when the tide is out, (if you are persitent that is).
When you get thirsty - have a cocktail from the resort bar just behind the beach. You can walk north to the river mouth of Myall Creek, but do not cross - as large crocodiles lives here.

Hartley's Crocodile Adventures
Check it out for yourself, but personally I love the index page of the website for Hartley's Crocodile Adventures. The animal noises in particular are just great.
Situated on the magnificent coastal drive between the popular destinations of Palm Cove and Port Douglas. Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures is the best place to see crocodiles and native wildlife in Tropical North Queensland. Set in the foothills of the MacAlister Range, in a World Heritage listed area, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures is home to a range of habitat types including melaleuca wetlands, riverine rainforest and eucalypt woodland.
Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures provides an innovative approach to viewing and interacting with wildlife, enabling visitors to become immersed in a natural environment with safety. A series of timber boardwalks provide elevated viewing of wildlife as visitors journey through a range of natural habitats.
ACTIVITIES
Hartley's is famous for its exciting and educational wildlife presentations including crocodile shows, wetland wildlife, snake show, cassowary feeding, koala feeding and more. Some activities are presented more than once allowing for half-day visitors. Our experienced keepers encourage questions about the animals and their habitat. Be sure to check out our daily activity program listing times and presentations.
FACILITIES
These unique facilities add another dimension to what is already a wonderful attraction. Hartley's has its own conference and education centre set amongst natural and tranquil surroundings available for half-day and full-day hire. Lilies Restaurant specialises in regional delicacies including crocodile meat and is ideally situated overlooking Hartley's Lagoon.
The fully airconditioned Paperbark gift shop is the place to purchase genuine Australian crocodile leather goods with export permits as well as many other Australiana souvenirs.

Seasontosmile - what's in a name ?
Seasontosmile can mean whatever you want it to mean, and I'm sure it will be good.
For example, when a starved and disillusioned Spurs supporter (me) finally gets to experience a season like we had last year, then it is definitely seasontosmile.
You might win a million dollars, and have seasontosmile. Whatever ...
This blog is starting to take shape - and one area where it may turn out to be useful is with all the links that start appearing. Some are on the right hand side, and almost every post has a travel related link of some sort.
These links may also benefit my own website - seasontosmile.

Mossman Gorge
Mossman Gorge is one of the most visited spots in the Wet Tropics. Part of the Daintree National Park, the gorge is the traditional home of the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people. You may take a cultural tour and visit the art gallery at Mossman Gorge to learn more about their unique Rainforest Aboriginal culture.
There is a 2.4km (1.5 mile) self-guided walking track and day use area in the national park. The water is clear - the rocks may be slippery and the river is fast flowing - but swimming in the cold water is a great experience!!!!
HOW TO GET THERE - 10 minutes drive north of Port Douglas, take the signposted turnoff in Mossman and drive 6km to the Gorge.
Read more about things to do in the Wet Tropics on http://www.wettropics.gov.au.

Quicksilver Cruises
Quicksilver cruises are the most popular way to see the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas.
Quicksilver takes you to Agincourt Reef, at the very outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Here, special reefs known as ‘ribbons’ run parallel to the Continental Shelf. Adjacent to the Coral Sea trench, these ribbon reefs are recognised as the most pristine eco-systems in the reef’s environment.
Your trip will include:
- Return Wavepiercer cruise from Port Douglas.
- Return transfers to your accommodation.
- Morning and afternoon teas on board.
- Reef presentation by marine biologist.
- Hot and cold tropical smorgasbord lunch.
- All snorkelling equipment provided.
- Qualified snorkelling safety officers on hand.
- Underwater observatory fish & coral viewing.
- Coral viewing by semi-submersible vessels.
- Fish feeding [conducted by crew]
My personal favourite is a trip to the Low Isles on Wavedancer - the Low Isles are closer to Port Douglas, less people, more pleasant boat trip, you get off the boat and on to the island - and there is plenty to see.
Quicksilver's 30 metre luxury sailing catamaran, Wavedancer, offers the excitement of big ship sailing combined with the ultimate in comfort. Simply soak up the sun and sea air under the sails on the expansive deck.
Low Isles is a historic part of The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Named by Captain Cook in 1770, the cays were the site of the first extensive scientific study of a coral reef anywhere in the world in 1928, and their landmark lighthouse has greeted visitors since 1878.
Your trip will include
- Coach pick up from accommodation
- Return Wavedancer cruise from Port Douglas
- Morning and afternoon teas on board
- Reef presentation by marine biologist
- Tropical smorgasbord lunch
- All snorkelling equipment provided
- Qualified snorkelling safety officers on hand
- Glass bottom boat coral viewing
- Marine Biologist guided beach walk
- Guided snorkelling tour with a Marine Biologist
My advice is to forget the lunch - and spend as much time as possible on the island. Go for a walk and explore what's there. Snorkelling is great, but there is so much more to see.

- Tropical smorgasbord lunch

- Qualified snorkelling safety officers on hand
- Glass bottom boat coral viewing
- Marine Biologist guided beach walk

Travel Resources
More travel resources have been added, including Tourism Australia, but more importantly ...
Like the rest of Australia we are totally exhausted today after watching the socceroos go down 1-0 to Italy overnight. What a way to go - a dubious penalty with 6 seconds to go. OK, so sending off Materazzi was wrong, but that does not justify awarding the penalty.
Well done boys, you did us proud!

Green Turtles
Travellers will go to the Silver Series website to book a reef excursion on the SilverSonic or SilverSwift. These catamarans depart daily from Port Douglas and Cairns respectively.
Some will also click through to the gallery page and view magnificent images of marine life and corals. There are also bio's on fish and corals and the green turtle ....
Did you know that adult green turtles have a smooth, high-domed carapace, are olive green in colour, with occasional brown, reddish-brown or black highlights? Hatchlings have a black carapace with white margins around the carapace, flippers and on the plastron. Green turtles have one pair of prefrontal scales between their eyes.
Green turtles are found in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters around the world and appear to be the most abundant of the six species of marine turtle found in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. However, they are found in subtidal and intertidal coral and rocky reefs and seagrass meadows of the continental shelf. Green turtles are principally herbivorous as adults, eating mostly algae, seagrass, mangrove fruit and jellyfish.
Two genetic stocks of green turtles breed within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, a southern and a northern stock. These two stocks are the two main management units. The southern stock has nesting concentrated in the Capricorn/Bunker group of islands, with an average annual nesting population estimated at 8000 females. The northern stock has nesting concentrated around Raine Island and Moulter Cay with an average annual nesting population of 30 000 females.

Travel Resources
I have started to add a number of links to travel resources to this blog. These links are to
- My own websites such as Seasontosmile and Resortfinder and Chevron Island
- The traditional travel resources such as airlines, insurance, car rentals etc
- Holiday accommodation on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and North Queensland. (More to follow).
- Anything I find to be different or interesting. For example WebCams that let you see where you are going, or "technical" type resources such as the range offered by Google The latter which may include anything from little gadgets to blogging your holiday online is particularly interesting to me, and hopefully we can make something out of it.
I imagine that after a few months, there will be a few links on the right hand side here.

Seasontosmile - What a Night
This hasn't got a lot to do with Australian travel, but then again, the World Cup only comes around every four years (or in our case every thirtyfour years).
First up at midnight is Italy vs Czech Republic in the Group of Death.
Basically, the Czechs which are ranked 2nd in the world (even though they may not be that good) probably have to beat Italy to go through - and if they do, the Azzurri will not qualify for the next round if Ghana beats the USA. This is an absolute cracker, especially if we are lucky enough to see an early goal by either team.
Based on history, Italy always just scrapes through (no more no less), so Ghana might just stuff up - but Italy and the Czechs will have no way of knowing. Prediction 1 - 1.
The main game at 5am is of course Australia vs Croatia. I thought we were unlucky to be beaten by Brazil, and Harry Kewell missed a sitter just after he came on. Croatia is a very good team, but they do not score enough goals. I feel that the socceroos are on a good wicket and will do enough to go through. Prediction 1 - 1 and I hope Viduka gets the goal !!
