Port Douglas - where to stay ? It depends - obviously - on your circumstances. Family, couple, single, etc etc.
Lets' stay with yesterday's theme a bit longer, and look at the BreakFree & Mantra resorts in Port.
The basic choice is the BreakFree Reef Club. It's a "compact" resort with mainly 2 bedroom apartments. The rooms are quite small, so its not an obvious choice for big families. 10 minute walk to Macrossan, but so what ... I love the walk along the 4 Mile Beach.
A better choice for families looking for a basic standard is the Mango Tree (not a Stella resort). It's not flash, but very clean, spacious and comfortable. We particularly like the 2 storey town houses at the back, and please say hello to Dave and Racheal if you go there.
Across the road from the Mango Tree and only a block away from the Reef Club is the BreaFree Portsea Resort - a magnificent choice for young families. Life at the Portsea revolves around the pool, and what a great pool it is! Superb for the kids, so be prepared for a bit of noise. Lunch at the pool bar is great, and I love relaxing around the pool at night. I wonder where all the other guests are, because suddenly it is gone so very quiet....
These are a two hints for the Portsea. The first is to make sure you get a room overlooking the pool, and the second is that an apartment is worth the extra couple of dollars compared to a hotel room.
To me, the cream of the Stella resorts is the new Mantra Aqueous on Port. Beautiful rooms on the inside (either side of a long "ship" corridor), and two long pools either side on the outside. A short stroll to Macrossan - definitely the place for couples looking for a peacful few days in luxurious Port Douglas.
There is also the Mantra Links Resort which was previously known as Peppers Links. It is positioned a bit further away - in a beautiful setting at the edge of tropical rainforest adjoining the Links Golf Course. I haven't stayed there myself, but the Mantra - Peppers combination tells me its quality.
